So good to hear CPE Bach taken seriously in this morning's CD review. The "Leila Schayegh, Jorg Halubek" was a real ear opener, and if you think the Warner 13 CD set is indispensable, Presto have it on offer for £28.50. Sadly we did not get to hear much of the sacred works, it was at this stage I wished for less chat and more music.

If "Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu" interests you, there is this excellent recording at budget price:

        and on youtube:

We heard hardly anything of the Magnificat recording. There is chatter on the net about the fast speed, you do wonder if the tempi were dictated by the need to fit the three pieces on the CD. It is fast, even faster than this performance directed Hans-Christoph Rademann.

Enjoy the videos and music you love, upload original content, and share it all with friends, family, and the world on YouTube.

As I already have most of the discs in the Warner box, I opted for the one from DHM. You get the fabulous 'Last Sufferings of the Saviour' oratorio which alone is worth the price of the box. And a vintage Collegium Aureum performance of the Magnificat which to my mind gets the speeds just right.

I've not seen the DHM box, is that still available? Kuijkens's 'Last Sufferings of the Saviour' oratorio can be found on a single CD.

            OK I've found it now - http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/D...HM/88843021622

Indeed. This felt more like an edition of the Early Music Show than CD Review, and for once McGregor let his more knowledgable guest do some speaking. A very good overview of his oeuvre, and I will now be buying at least one of the box sets (I'll hunt out the appropriate thread to re-read forum members' recommendations).

The guest, though, did have some strange vocal mannerisms, laconic and adjective-laden, verging on the hyperbolic at times.

Go to Amazon...I got this box for about £14 there as opposed to double that on Presto.

However, the Warner Classics set draws on better performances and performers, it would seem from this morning's show.

What stood out for me today were the violin and keyboard pieces...wow!

Pegleg: how do you rate this new turbo-boosted Magnificat? Are there more commendable versions out there?

Thanks for the tip. I think the price difference is much closer now.

Totally agree about the Leila Schayegh & Jörg Halubek recording.

I'm not sure I'm the right person to answer your question re: the Magnificat. I'm currently working through what can be heard/sampled at youtube and record sites.

On balance, slight reservation aside re: tempo, the new Hans-Christoph Rademann stands out from the crowd of what I've found of exisitng recordings. If the DHM CD set was still just £14 at Amazon, I'd go for that for the alternaive Magnificat and Kuijkens's 'Last Sufferings of the Saviour' oratorio that MickyD recommended, but it's now £17.54.

You can sample the Hans-Christoph Rademan CD here: http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/H...C902167#listen

P.S. I did come across this tatalising extract on youtube: live and unedited Barockorchester L'Arco Hannover with German bass-baritone Julian Redlin in 2014 with the Aria "Fecit potentiam" from C. Ph. E. Bach's Magnificat: http://youtu.be/xDhyFtWq5Jg

I also have a 2002 version of the Magnificat (coupled with JC Bach's Magnificat) in a performance from La Stagione under Michael Schneider. I notice it is now unavailable, except on Amazon.fr for the princely sum of 300 odd euros!!! It isn't that good!

I agree with Throppers that the Warner set has excellent things in it, is just that I have most of them already. The DHM box gives me a chance to clean up on some older issues that I missed...such as that superb oratorio in a winning performance from La Petite Bande.

I've just been listening to part of Kuijken's Die letzten leiden des erlösers on youtube: http://youtu.be/XxygIOWhrvo

It really is superb, wonderful duets.

Exquisite! I can see why MickyD wanted the DHM set now.

Thought I'd post here rather than on the CD Review thread about one of the presenters...

I thought the selection of Bach recordings discussed on this morning's programme was fascinating -

                                * high point: the wonderful accompaniment to the 'Essurientes' section of JSB's Magnificat in the Munich Bach Orchestra recording (though I disagreed that the singer adopted the same lilting, even witty style as the brilliant instrumentalists)

                                * low point: the Christine Schäfer JSB solo cantatas - long time since I've heard anything which seemed to me so subtly but completely 'wrong' (and I love the singer - big fan of her 'Winterreise' for instance). It was fascinating that it might be something to do with the pitch chosen, which was above normal 'modern' concert pitch, if I remember correctly.

OH and another high point - James Gilchrist's 'Evangelist' in the new AAM 'St John Passion'

                                Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
