Berta Joncus on this Saturday's CD Review...

I see she is on this Saturday's programme discussing J.S. Bach's vocal music. May I remind fellow boarders that she was severely criticised on her first appearance some 8 years ago. So much so, that Andrew McGregor gave posters to the old BBC board a scolding!

May I respectfully suggest that any criticism of her (if any!) is tempered with a degree of civilised behaviour? It was, for me, a real low point of this forum.

What if she were to say rude things about Ida Haendel though ?

That's different! All bets are off!

I did have an interesting time looking at the old site though.

I've had the pleasure of meeting her in the intervening time. Can't say that I ever encountered anyone more skilled in sarcasm and condescension. Was that the problem on-air eight years ago?

We must have got very close to that a couple of weeks ago when there were dreadful comments (thankfully later removed) about a Saturday morning speaker on the CD industry.

Dr Joncus is a much respected academic and writer; I cannot see how anyone would have grounds for criticism.

As I remember it, could be quite wrong, her BAL was for best performance of unaccompanied Bach by a female violinist. At any rate there were no serious male contenders. Perhaps quite rightly.

I must look through my old CD Reviews to see if I can find her BaL.

This forum? We didn't start until November 2010

Reading what you said again, I assume you meant 'that forum'?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

But I'd echo your sentiments anyway. Unpleasant comments about individuals, be they other members, Radio 3 staff or broadcasters, performers, members of your own family, anyone else, are unnecessary and unwelcome. They are unpleasant for others to read and reflect badly on the forum and FoR3. There. I've said it.

I do vaguely remember Berta Joncus and CD Review on the old BBC site but I can’t remember what, if any, contribution I made, except that I was probably not too impressed with her. (If I remember correctly).

However, even if we were modded quite a lot on those old BBC boards, they were fairly tolerant and allowed quite a wide spectrum of views. In the end they closed the boards down so I’m not sure how accepting they really were. (Probably it was just to save money).

The point I’m coming to, and I’m sure I’m in a minority of one, is that I find this forum now to be rather authoritarian. There are new members who I have never met before, and who are of the opinion that i do not live up to the tenets of the forum, but who are they to say what these are?

I would say that they are probably correct as I am reminded by someone in charge that these are indeed the rules.

So I will not reply to any further arguments made, as there is nothing to be gained in so doing, but will retire from the scene and bow out.

                      Best wishes and regards

                      Ariosto

Sorry, Ariosto, this is nonsense, for goodness' sake don't leave the forum so soon after you have re-joined it!

Sorry to appear authoritarian,. I had no thought of Ariosto being in any way involved with what pg was referring to. I was simply echoing pg's request that there should be no repetition of what happened last time. We have Terms and Conditions and House Rules like other forums, and people who post here have agreed to abide by them.

I don't remember who said what and I certainly wasn't getting at anyone in particular but I do remember the remarks being extremely unpleasant. (Something along the lines of who is this American woman to tell us European's about our music!)

Her previous BAL was Messiah in 2009:
