I think they have two organs, a big Walker at the West end and a smaller Frobenius at the East. Finzi's God is Gone Up with a Triumphant Shout should showcase one or the other....maybe both....but no doubt Messiaen will be on the biggy.

          Very enjoyable Evensong thus far.

Is it just me or is the organ slightly - and deliciously - in need of a tune, at least in parts....?

Maybe because of the very hot weather over the weekend? (And Sussex was one of the hottest places.)

A fine CE with a terrific mixed top-line and very mature-sounding ATB...maybe some adults there? Many potential choral scholars there too , I guess. And so musically directed! Yes the reeds were very out of tune, but hey...think French.

Yup, BIG top line with bags of pzazz.
And the organist was not hiding lights under any bushels, eh?

A very satisfying CE - 'that's the way to do it' - springs to mind. The Finzi was always going to be the high spot for me, with the opening line being one of the best examples in my view, of how to set words so that they sing the meaning of their own accord, so to speak. The canticles were an unknown, and I enjoyed them but could someone please clarify who wrote them? There is discrepancy between the summary and the listing of music broadcast on today's schedule. Given the mistake with the psalm setting composers on the music list( done by someone unfamiliar with CE?) I'm assuming that the summary version, ie Neil Cox composer, is the correct attribution?

Yes Neil Cox wrote the Canticles.
Good to open the service with Bach Prelude in C.... not on the music list....even if the start is missing from iplayer. (Well, it was when I tried it just now.)

Indeed, hence my use of the word "deliciously"

A very exciting and uplifting CE as befits the season. The Walker organ sounds a terrific beast to play with loads of colour and dash with stunning playing throughout. The singing equally big and gutsy, entering into the season. I enjoyed the Cox canticles; very attentive to the text. The only blot for me was the intrusive low bass that the organ thrust on the psalms for much of the time and spoilt the classic chants to these texts. A hard act to follow after St John’s lesson last week on how to accompany psalms. Thoughtfully delivered prayers and a nice touch of JS to play a gentle carol of Finzi afterwards.

I am not sure but I think that the reason for the interesting tuning of the organ could well be because they played the west end Walker organ from the east ( they are electronically linked via pistons). The east Frobenius organ faces south and gets the full sun so was sharp to the west organ. if you listen again to the Messiaen the organ sounds better because the Frobenius is not in use.

One of the longest introits I've ever heard on a CE broadcast!
